PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Welcome To America, W2A’s programs are designed to connect newly arrived immigrants to services and resources to help ease their integration in America. Our weekly orientation presents a general overview of our organization and cover in depth, an array of topics including, housing, employment, immigration, education. Participants would have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with our staff to determine their needs. An intake form will be completed by each participant and after evaluation, referrals are made to the appropriate social services or other agencies to assist further.

IMMIGRANTS EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP
Over a dozen constituents participated in the W2A’s workshop at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana—W2A’s new site in West Harlem—on January 25th to learn how to chart a new career pathway or connect to resources to help improve their overall quality of life in America. The workshop covered an array of topics; including Housing, Employment, Education, Food Insecurity, Immigration, Mental Health and more. Over the years, W2A has found that many immigrants who have earned High School Certificate or Advanced Degrees abroad wound up starting over, working odd jobs once they arrived in America. Our organization’s mission is to identify as many of these individuals as possible and assist them with the evaluation and translation of their transcripts to meet the American requirements, so they can leverage their prior education to a better beginning in America. W2A has identified ten such candidates since December 2022. We are also working on enrolling people into paid apprenticeship programs, searching for other job opportunities through the DOL and DOE, assisting with finding affordable housing and nutritious food sources for families in need. Over 60% of the immigrants in New York City are reported to earn below the $67,046 Median Household Income which means their families may qualify for public assistance and other social services regardless of their immigration status. These illustrate the critical information W2A share in our workshops and Whatsapp group platform and most importantly, we help facilitate access to these resources.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: HOUSING, IMMIGRATION, LAW ENFORCEMENT
In response to growing cases of tenants being threatened by ICE with deportation and harassed because of their perceived/actual immigration status, the Commission is hosting a series of housing panel and resources presentations to educate New York City residents. Immigration status is one of the leading causes of fear of filing complaints. This year’s housing event is in collaboration with MOIA, MOPT, NYCDSS, NYCHPD, African International Collaborative Center, unLocal, African Life Center, Welcome 2 Africa, Africans Help Desk, Catholic Charities, DSI International, Inc., and African Communities Together (ACT). In addition, all the panel presentations will be provided/ facilitated in different languages.
